Arsenal v. Liverpool 4-1 22/May/09

The young Gunners enjoyed a dreamy match today at the Grove, when nearly securing the trophy against a grim and boring Liverpool side. Before this match the young Gunners enjoyed a successful run against Sunderland, Spurs and Man City respectively. Beating the likes of the previous teams, the morale could not have been higher. All that is expected is for these younglings to secure their second trophy this season to finish what could be catalogued as the greatest season in the overall history of the reserve and youth teams. With such a support from the locals it seemed rather unavoidable that these players could not have made it through as they did. With the likes of Jack Wilshere the team has secure a bright future in the arms of these youngsters.

Bould's successful lineup proved to be rather exquisite; a switching 4-4-1 to 4-2-3-1. The disposition of players in this formation gives a particular edge of midfield control, mainly relying on the two holding midfielders. Despite the glimpses of brilliancy from the young Gunners in counter attacks, Emmanuel Frimpong came off after an early injury in a clash, from which Sanchez Watt came in at the 16th minute.
Pressure piled for the Liverpudlians when Wilshere set Cruise in a pass that found Thomas, who just shot wide. A minute later the lead came from Gilles Sunu in an adventurous, yet rapid display when Wilshere's vision denied four Liverpool defenders with a through ball on Landsbury who later set Sunu to score. Possession graphics over the last five minutes before the 30th showed how busy Liverpool's keeper was; 85% for the home side.
As if the calls on door were not enough, after Emmanuel-Thomas freekick on the post, Watt chased the ball just to get tackled by the opposition's defense. Eventually Wilshere gave the Londoners the second lead from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. A minute after, as if it were a cameo of the seniors game at Anfield, Kacaniklic score an impressive and thunderous shot to top corner. Apparently Liverpool were back in the game after the electrifying volley but again the pace implied in the game by Wilshere immediately had the needed impact to wore off the effect of Liverpool's goal. With three minutes added not much happened before the half time whistle.

Entering the second part, the Liverpudlians did enough efforts to keep the Gunnner's goal at risk but obviously, the man that delivered the deadly finish, was substitute Sancez Watt on a accurate through set by who else but Jack Wilshere. Bouzanis risked himslef from a sure sentoff, after a wild Fabiasnki tackle on Watt. There was not much that Liverpool could do due to the resilient north London defending. From that point it was obvious that the game was on its way to increasse the lead from the Gunners. The momentum enjoyed by the home side was extended by the crowd at the Grove. A couple of minutes after the third goal, Emmanuel-Thomas flicked the ball after a Lansdbury delivery that ended the aspirations of the northern team.
There was not much to do for the visiting team in the remaining twenty minutes rather than chasing the ball with a couple of crosses and a handful of futile arrivals. Bould's ambitions to finish the game were obvious, when in the 74th minute subtituted Gilles Sunu with Rhys Murphy. Liverpool's center-halves could not cope with the pace provided by Wilshere's long balls and the fast, agile movements of Murphy, that could have finished in five or six the scoresheet, reaching the 84th.

Many of the Arsenal sites highlight, rather lightly due to the many games played by the first team. It is obvious that with this advantage the second leg seems more and more relaxed if not easy, but against Liverpool, even at this stage of development, one can never be sure. A solid performance is all that these young players need to secure the double that their senior counterparts would envy.

Barcelona v. Man Utd 2-0 27/May/09

To say it in few words, the best side won. Even if I had to swallow all my pride, the Catalonians did the best to outclass the Mancunian side in a trembling match. If the Gunners had any hopes for ten minutes at their ground in the previous leg of the semifinals, the same happened to the English side. In any case the clash between titans evidently threw only one winner, which resulted to be the Spanish one. I though that at times the Manchester team were not even a shade of what they were in the previous two seasons. Simply Barcelona outclassed, outshoned and overwhelmed them in every departement to find a one-way entrance to goal.
The failure of the English side to secure the first consecutive win in the histpry of the tournament was shadowed by the Spanish style. Impressively the underdogs were the Spanish, and alongside the gargantuan amount of positive impressions of English media on the Manchester side, Barcelona won fairly.
The crème de la crème of European hierachy was summoned in the Eternal city; from Platini, to Prime Minister Zapatero through Prince William, followed by Berlusconi for what has been poised as the "greatest match in the history of football." Obviously the heat of the moment neglect any rational thought from this utterance. Any final played by Nottingham Forest back in the sixties, 1999's final, Liverpool's epic comeback to name a few, can be recorded as the most impressive and outstanding matches in the history of the competition, but certainly not of the history of the beatiful game.
The outstanding covergae of the match, with a preview a midtime analysis and a post match review led by Martin Tyler was just marvelous. I have to say that I enjoyed the comments and the match development by the crew of Sky Sports. Just one advice, get ride of that idiot of Jamie Redknap.

Profet in his land? Well, debutant and with a treble, can anyone ask for more?

In the afore mentioned preview, startingly enough Cristiano Ronaldo said that the attention should be driven on the teams rather that his "conforntation" with Messi. I really could not believe the words from the Portuguese since we all know the incredible halo of god-like arrogance that surmounts around him.
Despite the fact that Barcelona had an all-patchedup defense, the trouble came from the Spanish midfield maestro Xavi.

600

Not even a minute had passed and Cristiano Ronaldo found himself with an incredible 20-meter free kick, which was clumsily deflected by Valdez with later help from Pique, who cleared the ball to prevent Park from scoring. After the 7th minute, Cristiano had two chances, the latter made with a lovely chest control just wide. Then in the 10th minute, the "goal machine" named by Tyler, awoke through a brilliant play by Iniesta who set Eto'o and later finished, after a lovely chop, on van der Saar's goal. The nightmare for the English fans and players in the field began when immediately after the Spanish lead Xavi controlled of the game. The pressure of the Catalonians on Machester's clearances were amazingly choking; the wide three strikers left the void place in the middle for the three Spanish midfielders, thus the superiority of the Catalan midfield.
Utd simply were not able to throw a simple long ball through ten minutes, due to the overwhelming pressure, possession and taleted Barcelona midfield. Not even one chance came from the "visitors" and from the 25th to the 35th the Catalonian side gave one ball away. From then on reaching the final minutes, Ferguson's men attempts were delayed when entering to cross-zone. Barcelona's defense was whimsically fit and while Ronaldo tried for the most part to overcome the defensive line it was obvious that the control would be, for at least the following half, for the Spanish side.

At the end the rat got his trophy, the question remains if it is the side wich he wanted it with. I am glad for Sylvinho.

With what appeared to be the weak link for Barcelona actually proved to be the most important: Barcelona's defense. Within large periods of the second part the Spanish side kept possession while Utd were not able to challenge. Van der Saar denied Henry's attempt in the 49th as well as Eto'o's in 50th. Xavi's shot on woodwork and an alleged penalty on Messi, not even reaching the 55th minute, proved the fact that the Mancunians were running like headless chickens. The moments when the English side tried to speculate with the ball immediately the Spanish midfield commanded by Xavi recovered and distributed the ball.
Twice Giggs failed to give Park a through ball, mainly because he was tired. While the attempts from Man Utd came by the minute it was obvious that in one of those deadly counters, with all the open spaces, would result in a goal. And eventually it appeared, and in what a way! Messi headed a perfect Xavi cross to give the Spaniards a good advantage deep into the game. The goal was a cameo of Mancester's game; a powerless defensive apparatus against an accurate and incisive connection between the mifield and the forward.
After the goal, the Catalonian side relaxed for large parts of the remaining twenty minutes while Man Utd decided at last, to attack, more with the obligation and desperation than with decision or talent. Now it did not seem as if there was another three-minute two-goal miracle on the work due to the way the "visiting" were playing, or even to the tired and diffult opposition they faced. Desparation was reflected on the nasty tackle by Scholes on Busquets.
The match ended quite arduous, with nothing left to play from a brilliant display by the Spanish side: three minutes for stoppage and the new European Champions are FC Barcelona.

2008/2009 Jav's Arsenal Awards

Always with the goal of improving and bringing the tradition of the awards, already made from last season EURO 2008, I am delighted to bring you, dear reader, the 2008/2009 Jav's Arsenal Awards. Among many improvements made in posts are the triple match picture features and half block columns, along with extended grammar and spelling revision. You know dear reader, that I close the season with a full round up, and the fact that many people do the that in the final part of the year irritates me, so I do it at season's end. I will try to contrast it with the previous season regarding the figures and prospects that I had this previous term. The usual overall balance by each position is provided among with several common things with the other awards, and some new adds. Enjoy dear reader!

Best Young Player of the Season
Again, the average of age in the team, for this awards, is U-23.

Jack Wilshere: It is true that the beginning of the season did cost him a lot but when he found his pace, the toll of goals and appearances increased, covering a position that needed refreshment and which provided the final step he needed: confidence. Obviously his chances will decrease but his early impact in the season did make some Gooners sigh but his growth as a player in Arsenal's side will certainly become a subject of interest in the next years. His performances for both reserves and youth teams earned him the double that the Arsenal youth ranks can presume to have now.

Worst Young Player of the Season

Not even a stain of dirt!

Amaury Bischoff: If someone skipped him in any review or comment it may well be the same as skipping breakfast ona busy day. Slow, clumsy and perma-crooked, the Portuguese midfielder did not feature in the starting eleven for the team in a whole year, being one of the "major siginings" by Wenger last summer, with a couple of passes, tackles and a shot among his repertoire in the four appeareances, all as substitue, this season. Maybe the best picture of him is watching him above Jack Wilshere and Lukas Fabiasnki, above the bench, in the place for injured players.

Best Goal of the Season

1-Arsenal 4-0 Blackburn by Andrei Arshavin

And incredibly stunning goal, offered only through a Playstation match. Magnifique display of footwork, technique, speed and finishing, top class.

2-Villareal 1-1 Arsenal by Emmanuel Adebayor
Tremendous technique in what was a match-winning goal, considering the circumstances.

3-Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal by Andrey Arshavin
The final touch to a dream night that saw him as the giant. Event though the party was spoiled by the late equalizer his deed shall remain in the Gunner's memory long enough.

*-Special Mention Arsenal 6-0 Sheffield United by Carlos Vela
The second in his three goal tally that day, saw his main asset to arise as the Gunners' brightest immediate star.

Best Match of the Season

1-Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal (EPL)
A heart-breaking game that saw how the Gunners resurged from the bottoms to see the best spirit of the team.

2-Newcastle 1-3 Arsenal (EPL)With the Toon Army support, the Geordies managed to keep Arsenal on a tight leash for sixty minutes, in a speedy good match.

3-Arsenal 3-0 Villareal (UCL)
The solid display put the Gunners in the semifinals of the European tournament.

*-Shefield Utd 0-6 Arsenal
The tremendous haul of goals that the youngsters provided is among the best performances in Carling Cup history.

Worst match of the season
1-AS Roma 1-0 Arsenal (UCL)
A terrible display by the north Londoners was spared by the excellent penalties execution.

2-Stoke 2-1 Arsenal (EPL)
Rory Delap and the horrid defending gave the Potters the home win at Britannia Stadium

3-Arsenal 0-0 Fenerbahce (UCL)
One of the most boring matches that I have ever seen in my entire life ended in a goaless draw. Nothing to do with the previous match in Turkey. If you can avoid repetition or skip in season review, do it, it will save you healthy neurons for the next day.

*-Tottenham 0-0 Arsenal (EPL)
In yet another London derby, the frail and childish stupor that emerged from London rivals was nothing compared with the eight goal thriller earlier in the season. Wenger's men were lucky to scrap a tie from Spurs, this time.

**-Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd
The final humiliation in yet another tough and sad end of season for two consecutive years. Cristiano Ronaldo outclassed the team in every departament, and even though Utd did not win the final, the wound remains open as last years' last gasp goal, courtesy of Owen Hargreaves.

Best Young Revelation

1-Jack Wilshere
2-Carlos Vela
3-Aaron Ramsey

Best Revelation

1-Andrey Arshavin
2-Jack Wilshere
3-Samir Nasri

Injured player of the Season

In the nurse's favorites section we have the ill-managed, ill-fated Czech captain. Cesc is not mentioned due to his enormous contribution to the club, even with a four-month digression.
1-Tomas Rosicky
2-Amaury Bischoff
3-Mikael Silvestre

Worst Player of the Season

1-Amaury Bischoff
2-Mikael Silvestre
3-Emmanuel Eboue

Best Player of the Season

1-Robin van Persie
-Andrey Arshavin
3-Samir Nasri

Players to Watch

Defense: As the previous year I expect the inclussion of Harvard Nordveit in a Carling Cup clash. Obviously the new signing Vermaelen will have to prove his value and the battle for the left back position between U21 Gibbs and Clichy.

Midfield: Fran Merida final jump to first team should be, not as the previous year, a secondary attraction while Jack Wilshere stole each and everyone attention last season. Aaron Ramsey, Mark Randall should all make greater efforts to jump into the first team. Alex Song clumsy performances evolved into neatly solid defensive displays and next season more will be expected from the youngster.

Forward: Nicklas Bendnter's impressive tally should be more regular and the bright start of Mexican Vela should bring him to a higher standard in the team. Nacer Barazite is the greatest doubt, and after a series of loan spells he should be availabke for some games. Also Emmanuel-Thomas and the double youth champions should be an interesting addition.

Best Goalkeeper: Manuel Almunia
Best Defender: Bacary Sagna
Best Midfielder: Samir Nasri
Best Striker: Robin van Persie

Newcastle United Relegation Tribute - Loony Toons!

Well deserved! Welcome to the Toon!
